There are two different types of Battlefield Heroes items: visual and convenience items.

Currency

Currency in the game is called Valor Points and this can be earned simply by playing the game. Battle Funds is the currency that you can purchase with real money.

Visual Items

Valor points can be used to purchase visual items that allow you to customize your hero and give him his own unique look. There are 10 areas that you can customize: Face, head, neck, accessory, body, chest, hands, waist, legs and feet.

Convenience Items

Convenience items do not affect stats in any way, for example, you won’t be stronger or faster with items. However, this may change in the future if gamers demand for it.

One of the convenience items known gives you the ability to level up faster by giving more experience points than usual.

We think these are probably the micro-transactions that EA has hinted about (items that cost real money but are not necessary).
