Colin K. M. Clarke has just published new info about special abilities in the official development blog.

Clarke reminisces about Battlefield Moments which is a “time in the game when things go horribly right.”

To create these kind of moments in Battlefield Heroes, he envisioned “controlled chaos” which is now known as special abilities. These abilities were created to make the game humorous, even in defeat.

The grenades spam allows the soldier class to throw multiple grenades at once. Each grenade explodes at a different rate so that when one grenade explodes, the others are ‘pushed’ somewhere else before exploding. Repeat this process a few times and you got a bunch of hyperactive grenades jumping and bouncing around. Chaos at it’s finest!

Gunner’s got a heroic shield which can shield both himself and nearby teammates. This shield lasts a short period of time or until a certain amount of damage is inflicted. Clarke likes to think of these gunner as the ‘nice guy’ which explains why this big dude has a big heart.

This leaves the commando class as the ‘evil’ ones. Ironically though, their special abilities are the least chaotic in the sense that they are are very precise and ‘deliberate’ acts. These include: “increase his damage with his sniper rifle, poison victims with his knife, turn invisible both to run away or to gain an advantage over the unwary prey, or set down a trap to catch the inattentive.”

The best is left for last and it might just be the most chaotic special ability to ever set foot in Heroes.

Soldiers are granted a telekinesis ability known as the blasting strike. It allows them to “take nearby enemy troops, vehicles, and empty vehicles and move them elsewhere.” Clarke gave a few crazy examples like throwing a jeep into a passing spitfire or sticking a tank in the most unlikely of all places.

There are much more abilities in the game, but these should give you a good idea of why this game is a “cartoon-shooter”!
